ABOUT SHOSEIEN
The Shoseien Garden, also known as called 'Karatachi tei' (a kind of orange tree) - since there used to be a trifoliate orange tree grove surrounding this park - is currently part of the Higashihongan-ji Temple. Although it is separated from it physically. Shoseien used to be a retreat of the chief priest or a shelter. The place was donated to Higashi Hongan-ji by the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu in1641. The garden was designed by Ishikawa Jozan in 1653.
